Winter and Your Skin
NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS FROM INFANTS TO ADULTS.
Winter can be a challenging time for skin. The cold weather, low humidity, and harsh winds can exacerbate skin issues, causing flare-ups and discomfort. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and even acne, can worsen in the winter months. However, with the right precautions, it's possible to keep your skin healthy and minimize flare-ups.
1. Hydrate Your Skin Regularly: The cold air and indoor heating can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leading to dryness, itching, and irritation. To prevent this:
-
Use a humidifier in your home to maintain moisture levels in the air.
-
Apply a thick moisturizer after bathing while your skin is still damp. Look for products that contain ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid.
-
Choose fragrance-free moisturizers.
2. Take Short, Lukewarm Showers: Hot showers can feel comforting during winter but can actually strip the skin of essential oils. To protect your skin:
-
Opt for lukewarm showers instead of hot ones. Limit shower time to 5-15 minutes.
-
Pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing it.
3. Use Gentle Skin Care Products:
-
Avoid products with alcohol or harsh exfoliants which can dry out or irritate skin.
-
Always patch-test new products to ensure they don’t cause adverse reactions.
4. Protect Your Skin from the Elements:
-
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50, even during winter. UV rays can still cause damage, even on overcast days.
-
Wear gloves, scarves, and hats to shield your skin from the wind and cold climate.
5. Consult Your Dermatologist Regularly: For those with chronic dermatological conditions, winter can present unique challenges. It’s crucial to stay on top of your treatment plan:
-
Follow your doctor’s advice regarding treatments or any lifestyle changes.
-
If you notice a significant worsening of your condition, reach out to your dermatologist to discuss potential adjustments to your treatment regimen.
Tis the season for skin. Enjoy the holidays!
