Summer and Sunscreen

NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS FROM  INFANTS TO ADULTS.

It’s that time of year again… Summer! A time where many of us choose to spend a little extra time outdoors. For some of us that may be by the pool, playing catch in the backyard, or just relaxing outdoors watching the sunset. The days seem to last longer and for many of us it brings back memories of summers as kid bustling with family and friends gathering outdoors. It’s peaceful and invigorating, yet it can be the most lethal season for our skin if left unprotected and vulnerable to the sun.

Summertime is a favorite amongst many but, without the proper preparation for our skin it can lead to potentially deadly outcomes in the future. The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays nonstop year round, but they become especially powerful during the summer months here in Texas. Ultraviolet rays are capable of penetrating deep through the dermis of our skin where it causes mutations to our DNA cells. It is these changes withstood during our time as a child and teen that have the potential to evolve into a skin cancer during adulthood. Fortunately, various methods have been studied to provide our skin protection so that we can be both sun-smart and  enjoy time outdoors.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends patients wear a broad spectrum sunscreen containing at least SPF 50 and to be reapplied every two hours. The sun emits both UVA and UVB rays, and the cumulative lifetime exposure to these rays is directly correlated to incidences of skin cancer and aging changes. It is also important to know ultraviolet light is able to penetrate glass windows in our homes and vehicles. An alternative option to being sun-smart is wearing clothing with built in SPF protection such as hats, shirts, scarfs, arm sleeves and bathing suits.  The options and brands are endless. With these protective measures, patients have the opportunity to enjoy their time outdoors while protecting their skin.

Be sun-smart and enjoy some fresh air this month,

                                                                                       - Everyone at Dr. Grice Dermatology.
